AI market map: 500 leading VC-backed AI companies - PitchBook
PitchBook's AI market map categorizes the 500 largest VC-backed AI startups by capital raised into four segments—horizontal platforms, vertical applications, semiconductors, and autonomous machines—highlighting that in 2025 AI VC deal value hit a record $243.9 billion driven by outsized rounds like OpenAI's $40 billion, with vertical applications leading in deal count, semiconductors growing rapidly in deal value, and autonomous machines seeing record activity, illustrating diverse investment velocities and strategic focuses across the AI ecosystem.
Market Map Overview
What started as a race to build foundation models has expanded quickly into something harder to map. Infrastructure, applications, hardware, robotics: AI investment is flowing into several distinct segments at different velocities and for different reasons.
PitchBook tracks the market across four segments and more than a dozen subsegments, grouping tens of thousands of venture-backed companies into a framework that makes the landscape easier to navigate.

State of the AI VC Market
In 2025, AI VC deal value reached a record $243.9 billion, even as deal counts fell well below their 2021 peak. A handful of outsized rounds—most visibly OpenAI’s $40 billion financing—account for a disproportionate share of the total. That pattern has carried into early 2026, with major new rounds for OpenAI and Anthropic extending the streak.
Vertical applications led all segments in transaction count last year, with 4,609 deals, compared with 1,821 for horizontal platforms. Autonomous machines posted their strongest quarter on record in Q4 2025. Semiconductors, despite modest deal counts, saw deal value grow 82% year-over-year.
How the AI Market Breaks Down
- Horizontal platforms build and deploy AI tools across industries—they include foundation models, automation infrastructure, core compute layers. They attract the largest individual checks.
- Vertical applications apply AI to specific industries: healthcare, enterprise software, financial services and industrial operations. They account for most of the deal volume.
- Semiconductors cover the hardware layer—chip design, edge AI, and intelligent sensors. These areas are capital-intensive and strategically critical.
- Autonomous machines encompass robotics and systems that operate without direct human control. The segment’s deal value tripled quarter-over-quarter in Q4 2025.
